WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert Makes Bold Statement on Flau’jae Johnson Ahead of 2026 Draft

Flau’jae Johnson is projected as a first-round, top 3 to top 6 pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft. She joined the LSU Tigers in 2022, and over the last four years, she has established herself as one of the best players in the country.

She has made All-SEC and All-American teams and has won the NCAA title in 2023. She averages 14.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Johnson shoots over 46% from the field and 37% from the three-point line.

In addition to her stats, Johnson brings leadership qualities that any team could benefit from. Her final season with the LSU Tigers didn’t go as planned, as they finished fourth in the SC with a 29-6 overall record and 12-4 in the conference.

Their NCAA Tournament run was cut short after they lost to the Duke Blue Devils 85-87 in the Sweet 16. Despite the heartbreaking end to the season, Johnson’s draft stock hasn’t taken a hit.

During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert was asked if she thinks Johnson will play well in the WNBA. Pat McAfee said that he’s rooting for her and that he’s a “huge fan.”

“Huge fan of hers as well, followed her since she was a freshman, huge success at LSU, and just personality, and I can’t wait to see her at the draft,” Engelbert said.

The commissioner said that one of her favorite things about the WNBA Draft is that she gets to see players realize their lifelong dream of making it to the league.

“They say things like, ‘Thank you for making my dreams come true.’ And it’s truly the most inspiring part of the commissioner’s job for me,” she added.

Engelbert said that Johnson is part of the next generation of talent that will take over the WNBA in a few years.

Analyst Gave Flau’jae Johnson’s Mother a Reality Check

Johnson’s mother went viral for her rant after LSU’s loss against South Carolina in February. She claimed that the entire point of going to the WNBA is to make money, and her daughter is already very rich.

She boasted about her music career and said that Johnson has taken care of her financial situation. However, Doc Holliday disagreed with her and gave her a harsh reality check.

“Unfortunately, I don’t know if Flau’jae’s mom knows it or not, but there’s not a lot of money in the music business anymore,” he said.

Holliday also said that her mother’s comments about South Carolina players and how Johnson would beat “South Carolina in real life,” and that she’ll be a higher draft pick than South Carolina players were unnecessary.
