‘We’ll Always Consider Her a Gamecock’: Dawn Staley Takes Credit for MiLaysia Fulwiley’s Performance As LSU Lost Against South Carolina

MiLaysia Fulwiley and the LSU Tigers played Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks in the SEC Tournament semifinal yesterday. Staley’s Gamecocks registered a comfortable 83-77 win against the Tigers.

The Gamecocks have qualified for the SEC Tournament championship game while the Tigers’ run has come to an end. The Gamecocks will play the Texas Longhorns in the championship game today at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville.

Fulwiley came off the bench again and led her team in scoring with 24 points, shooting 10 of 21 from the field. She was also the highest scorer in the game, but her efforts weren’t enough to get the Tigers past the Gamecocks.

Before joining the Tigers in 2025, Fulwiley was part of Staley’s South Carolina. She developed as a player under Staley’s guidance and also won the NCAA trophy in 2024. The Gamecocks’ head coach was all praise for her former player.

“I kinda knew she was gonna have a good game,” Staley said. “I still think MiLaysia is a generational talent. She does things out there on the floor that I haven’t seen a whole lot of female basketball players do, and I’m generally happy for her.”

Staley also took credit for the player that Fulwiley has become. During her time with South Carolina, Staley worked on Fulwiley’s game closely, and she sees a lot of her lessons in what the Tigers guard does today.

“She’s actually doing some of the things that we talked about her doing,” she said. “I’m happy for her. She played two years for us, and we’re always gonna be happy. We’ll always consider her a Gamecock no matter what uniform she puts on.”

LSU will await its NCAA Tournament decision on Selection Sunday on March 15.

MiLaysia Fulwiley on Facing Dawn Staley’s Team

Every time the LSU Tigers face the South Carolina Gamecocks, conversations around Fulwiley and her history with the team create a lot of buzz. It could become tense for the star guard to navigate through.

However, when she was asked to share her thoughts ahead of the game, Fulwiley stated that she was only focused on the game. When asked if she took lessons from their previous matchups, she said:

“I don’t remember nothing. I’m a new player and my mindset right now…I’m ready.”

Fulwiley did her job yet again against the Gamecocks, leading the game in scoring. But due to a lack of support from teammates and South Carolina’s offensive onslaught, she couldn’t prevent the loss.
