Who is UConn Star Azzi Fudd’s Mom Katie? All we Know About Former WNBA Star

UConn Huskies star Azzi Fudd belongs to a basketball family, with both her parents, Katie and Tim, having played the sport before also getting into coaching. The Huskies star has already stated the important role both her parents played in her current status.

Ahead of the 2026 WNBA draft, where she is expected to be picked inside the top five selections, let’s get to know more about Fudd’s mother, Katie.

Who is UConn Star Azzi Fudd’s Mom Katie?

Azzi Fudd’s mother, Katie Fudd, is a former college star and WNBA draftee. She started her college career at NC State and earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors before transferring to Georgetown. There as well, Katie carved out a good career known for scoring prowess and locker room leadership. She averaged more than 15 points per game in each of her three seasons there.

Katie was selected in the 2001 WNBA Draft by the Sacramento Monarchs. Her WNBA career isn’t well-documented.

Katie tied the knot with Tim Fudd, a former college basketball player at American University from 1991 to 1996, where he earned All‑Colonial Athletic Association honors before taking up coaching.

Katie’s short-lived WNBA career actually inspired Azzi to work harder, as she told ESPN in 2022:

“I want to achieve her dreams that she didn’t get to achieve and do the things that she couldn’t do.”

Katie named Azzi, derived from her admiration for Jennifer Azzi. The Huskies star also wore No. 8 jersey in Jennifer’s honor in the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup championship run.

“I started to realize I love the game and that I was actually pretty good at it. And then I started to appreciate who Jennifer Azzi was. So probably around middle school was when it really kind of hit me that I was named after an amazing person and player,” Fudd said.

Last month, Fudd’s mother, Katie, was honored by her alma mater, Georgetown, when the matchup against Azzi’s UConn happened. During halftime, Katie was inducted in the 2026 Big East Legends class. Talking about the moment, Katie told She Got Game:

“It is crazy. Who would have thought? But I do think it comes back to leaving it better than you found it. I wanted to set a precedent of how you carry yourself, how you work, setting expectations of success and winning … not just ‘We are here to play,’ but ‘We are here to win.’”

Azzi Fudd’s parents founded GTS Fusion, a girls’ basketball development program in Washington, D.C., in 2012. Katie, who has experience working as a coach for the Potomac School, was named the program’s Head of Player Development and Head Coach of the 15U GUAA team.
