Despite an impressive season, Vic Schaefer let the emotions get the better of him after a loss to Vanderbilt earlier in the 2025-26 campaign. However, a few weeks down the road and with a Final Four ahead, Schaefer’s stance has completely changed.
“We had the hiccup at Vanderbilt. Just didn’t play well. We just didn’t show up very well at all that night. And boy, since then, our kids have been electric. They are so locked in. They really seem to be on a mission. Again, I’ve had a lot of great teams. This team’s right there at the very top. Offensively, they can score the ball; defensively, they can guard you. But they’re great kids, man. They’re fun to be around. They’re fun to coach. I love our culture. I love my locker room. I love our leadership,” Vic Schaefer heaped praise on his team on ‘The Paul Finebaum Show.’
Before praising his team, he mentioned how packed up Texas’ non-conference schedule was and how well his team navigated it. He mentioned beating UCLA and South Carolina. He also talked about injuries and the switch he saw in his team after the Vandy loss.
Vic Schaefer’s Texas has advanced to the Final Four after beating Michigan in a pretty one-sided game. They won the Elite Eight clash 77-41 and will now face Cori Close’s UCLA. It will be an interesting game, especially because Texas was the only team to beat UCLA in the regular season.
Texas itself lost only three games all season. They had an overall record of 35-3 and 13-3 in the SEC. They won the SEC tournament championships against South Carolina.
What did Vic Schaefer say about Texas after loss to Vanderbilt?
Texas lost 86-70 to Vanderbilt in February. Texas had no answers to Mikayla Blakes’ 34-point display. After the loss, Vic Schaefer did not hold back and publicly criticized his team.
“We have no heart,” Schaefer said. “We’re not tough. It’s probably the softest team I’ve had in years. It translates from practices … my fault. I’ll wear it. I’ll wear all of it. It’s my fault. It stops now.”
Many players might have taken this negatively and let it affect them. But the Texas team just improved from that game and hasn’t stopped. They understood the gravity of the statement made by their coach and are now in the Final Four with a dream to win it all
