College basketball is at its business end, and a lot of teams in women’s basketball have been impressive this season. Geno Auriemma’s UConn Huskies are clearly in top form as they have been unbeaten all season. The other usual names, like Dawn Staley’s South Carolina and Kim Mulkey’s LSU, have also been brilliant and look like teams that can challenge for the national championship.
Another promising team that has been flying under the radar is the Vanderbilt Commodores, and Mikayla Blakes is the one who’s leading them with great aplomb. In 29 games this season, she has been averaging 26.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. As compared to her career average, the sophomore has been pulling up career-high numbers.
In arguably the toughest division, Vanderbilt has been outperforming every prediction that was made at the start of the season. They have lost just three games all season. Vanderbilt is 12-3 in SEC play and 26-3 overall. The three games that they lost came against South Carolina, Ole Miss, and, most recently, Georgia.
Due to their phenomenal season, they have acquired the No. 2 seed in March Madness. Mikayla Blakes has been the major factor in Vanderbilt’s success this campaign. Now she has an achievement that Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, JuJu Watkins, and Ayoka Lee don’t.
The 20-year-old Vandy sophomore has recorded five consecutive 30-point games against top-25 opponents this season. Caitlin Clark is next on the list with four straight games in 2023. Paige Bueckers, JuJu Watkins, and Ayoka Lee all had three such games in 2025, 2024, and 2022, respectively.
