Geno Auriemma is currently in the middle of the offseason with the UConn Huskies. However, the 12-time Women’s National Championship-winning head coach is not staying away from the game of basketball.
According to reports, Auriemma is set to make a return to the commentator’s desk as Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings take on Breanna Stewart’s New York Liberty on July 7.
This won’t be Auriemma’s first rodeo on the call, however, as the veteran head coach was also part of the broadcasting team in the WNBA’s initial seasons, most recently during Diana Taurasi’s second-ever game back in 2004.
As news of Auriemma’s return spread, fans made their opinions known on social media.
One fan was happy to avoid Auriemma’s commentary by being present at the game in person:

While Paige Bueckers and Breanna Stewart are the primary cornerstones of their respective teams, Azzi Fudd and Lou Lopez Senechal are some of the other former Huskies on the Wings and Liberty rosters.
Geno Auriemma’s Controversial Interaction With Dawn Staley
While Auriemma and Staley have crossed paths several times in recent years, with both teams being two of the top rosters in the women’s college basketball game, the two have always had respect for each other, as evidenced by their media comments.
However, the relationship took a turn after the most recent National Championship game, after Staley’s South Carolina overcame the Huskies in a 14-point win. After the final buzzer, Auriemma made his way to center court and got into it with the Gamecocks’ head coach.
The back-and-forth soon turned into a shouting match with assistant coaches from both benches getting involved. Auriemma eventually made his way to the locker room without the team. However, the UConn head coach later apologized to Staley and the team for his actions.
