On Thursday, the LSU Tigers hosted their Senior Night to honor the team’s outgoing senior players as they hosted the Tennessee Volunteers. Among these seniors is Izzy Besselman, who has not been able to play for the Tigers this season after it was discovered that she is dealing with a certain heart condition.
Basselman was once a walk-on who earned praise from Kim Mulkey, who gave her a scholarship last season for her basketball prowess. However, she had been sidelined for the last two seasons due to inappropriate sinus tachiycardia, a heart condition that causes an abnormally high heart rate.
Despite this, for the first time in the season, with the Tigers about to seal the victory, Mulkey subbed her in with just 45 seconds to go, with the crowd erupting in applause. She soon addressed her insertion into the game after the big win.
“It was definitely surreal,” Besselman said. “It felt good to go out there one last time. We have the best fans in the country, so it meant a lot.”
Izzy Besselman, along with good friend Flau’jae Johnson, whom she had played with for four years now, were part of a special video tribute played on the Pete Maravich Assembly Center’s jumbotron for Senior Night. It had been a touching moment for her and the other seniors who will be leaving LSU after this season.
Kim Mulkey Addresses Izzy Besselman’s Heart Condition
As for Kim Mulkey, the legendary LSU coach actually knew Izzy Besselman ever since she was a child. She had attended Mulkey’s basketball camp as a second grader when the coach was still at Baylor, and she had followed her to LSU. As the team honored Besselman at Senior Night, Mulkey then talked about the player during the postgame.
“Izzy’s priorities in life are in order,” she said. . “While she loves basketball, she’s got her national championship ring, she got to play in front of her hometown, friends, and family. She understands that she’s trying to play basketball when most people that have her condition are just trying to live and survive. So Izzy’s a great, great young lady and teammate.”
Flau’jae Johnson also showed her teammate of four years a lot of love, calling her the “most selfless person” she knows.
