UConn Huskies Strength Of Schedule: Geno Auriemma Shuts Down Doubts On No. 1 March Madness Seed With Clear Message

Under Geno Auriemma, the UConn Huskies are on the verge of yet another undefeated run to the national championship after ending their Big East Tournament and regular-season runs with zero losses.

They enter March Madness not just as the No. 1 seed, but also as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. However, as with any undefeated team, there are still a lot of doubters who questioned UConn’s strength of schedule.

Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma appeared on the College Sports radio show on SiriuXM, and he addressed the doubters who do not believe that they should be the No. 1 team because of their strength of schedule, arguing that the Big East is not as competitive as the Big Ten or the SEC. In typical Auriemma fashion, he pushed back.

“That’s funny, you know, like UCLA’s biggest win was against Michigan, and we beat Michigan. We beat Ohio State, they beat Ohio State, we played a lot of higher ups,” he said.

“We were in the American Athletic Conference for seven years when we had Stewie and those guys and that conference was worse than this one… and we won four straight national championships.”

Doubters are saying that UConn did not have much wins against Q1 teams, as its only wins against Top 25 teams were against No. 20 Louisville, No. 6 Michigan, No. 16 USC and No. 11 Iowa. However, as Geno Auriemma himself has pointed out, the Huskies are the defending national champions.

Geno Auriemma’s UConn To Begin March Madness vs. American Conference Champs UTSA

As for the Huskies’ first opponents for their title defense, it will be against the UTSA Roadrunners from the American Conference. They are fresh off their American Conference Tournament championship win, defeating Rice in the finals and earning the chance to enter the tournament.

UTSA has an 18-15 overall record to come with that American Conference championship and is on a four-game winning streak. However, it is coming in as the overwhelming underdogs against the national champions as Geno Auriemma seeks yet another national title to his already record-setting resume.
