Dawn Staley’s South Carolina pulled off a brilliant win vs Kim Mulkey’s LSU. The Gamecocks extended their already impressive winning streak over the Tigers to 18 games. The game was a rather close one and was only decided in the final minutes. The game was pretty balanced, but South Carolina just got the edge over LSU as they won 79-72. And one of the best players on the court is Tessa Johnson.
LSU’s Flau’jae Johnson was the only LSU player to cross double digits in points, along with Mikaylah Williams. Flau’jae scored 21 points with 8 rebounds, while Mikaylah got 11 points. It was slim pickings from the rest for the LSU team. Former South Carolina star MiLaysia Fulwiley had a lot of attention on her and expectations to perform against her former team. However, she had a rather disappointing display.
South Carolina players had pretty even contributions as four of their starting five ended the game with double digits in points. Joyce Edwards scored 10 points, while Raven Johnson had 19 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Madina Okot got a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds.
The only player not getting double digits was Ta’Niya Latson, but she also got 8 points. However, South Carolina’s best player was Tessa Johnson with 21 points. And that performance meant her entering into the South Carolina history books.
With 21 points, Tessa Johnson became the only South Carolina player with more than 20 points in consecutive games against top 10 AP opponents since Aliyah Boston in the 2019-20 season.
LSU had no answers for Tessa Johnson. Kim Mulkey was animated on the sidelines when she shouted to her players, “Who can guard Tessa?” To which Grace Knox raised her hand, showing responsibility.
