Sa’Myah Smith’s season has come to an end. The forward wrapped up her fourth season in the NCAA with improvements in some areas of her game and setbacks in others. It appears that the forward isn’t ready to settle after one season with Virginia.
Smith posted on Saturday that her season had been a “rollercoaster” amid turmoil in her personal life and on the court. Amid the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the coaching situation, she announced she would be entering the transfer portal.
With one chapter ending, a new one has begun. However, where will that chapter take place? Here’s a look at some potential logical landing spots for the Virginia Cavaliers player.
3 Logical Landing Spots for Sa’Myah Smith
#3 – UConn Huskies
Sa’Myah Smith, like many college athletes, has plenty of reason to prefer to stay close to the area they know, even if the program changes. UConn would keep Smith on the East Coast.
It is clear that finding the right coach is a high priority for her as the apparent catalyst for her decision to enter the transfer portal, and it would be hard to find someone more accomplished than Geno Auriemma, who has been a playoff contender or better for the last 35 years.
#2 – South Carolina Gamecocks
The South Carolina Gamecocks are also located on the East Coast and are even closer in proximity than UConn. The Gamecocks came within a game of winning it all and have made a habit of deep runs under Dawn Staley. If Sa’Myah Smith wants a spotlight, it doesn’t get much bigger and closer than South Carolina.
#1 – West Virginia Mountaineers
Of course, the biggest problem with UConn and South Carolina, although solid options, is a high bar in terms of finding a spot with a lot of production opportunities. West Virginia is close, made a short run in March Madness, and is also more likely to have a feature role for Smith.
