Raven Johnson Makes Feelings Very Clear On Most Outstanding Player Honors Over Ta’Niya Latson, Joyce Edwards

Once again, the South Carolina Gamecocks have made it to the Final Four, and a big reason for that is point guard Raven Johnson. The senior led the Gamecocks there with her playmaking skills and leadership, earning her the Most Outstanding Player award for Regional 4. However, Johnson herself was not that impressed with the award and said that her teammates deserved to win it, too:

“I was like, ‘Wait. Me?’ I was actually giving it to my teammates like Gotti, Joyce, Ta’Niya… I wouldn’t get that award without my teammates. It’s a team thing. Everybody won Most Outstanding Player.”

Raven Johnson averaged 14 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists during the Sacramento 4 regional and was a defensive bulwark for the Gamecocks in addition to being their star playmaker. Thanks to her, the Gamecocks will be playing their sixth consecutive national semifinals and also their seventh one in nine years.

The senior guard now has the chance to win her third national championship, as she previously won her first two in 2022 and 2024, all under Dawn Staley at South Carolina. She is now a senior, so this should be her last hurrah in a Gamecocks jersey, as she must leave and won’t be eligible for college basketball anymore.

Dawn Staley All Praises After Raven Johnson Wins Most Outstanding Player Award

While Johnson may not be impressed after winning the award, her coach, Dawn Staley is, and was all praises for the senior point guard after she won the award:

“There was a core group, they’ve all gone to the WNBA, which leaves Raven left to just play how she’s playing this year,” she said. “Scoring when we’ve needed it, facilitating when it’s needed. She did some things on the way in this journey of the NCAA Tournament.”

Staley added that Raven Johnson is a “winner” and that people are now beginning to realize that.
