Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Missouri Tigers 112-71 at home. This was the 28th win of the season for Staley and her team. They claimed their SEC title after the win and celebrated on the floor.
The Gamecocks have been one of the most dominant teams this season with a roster full of star players. Raven Johnson has been their standout performer in terms of her on-court productivity and leadership skills.
After the game, the Tigers coach Kellie Harper, heaped praise on Johnson, stating that she has enjoyed Johnson’s game the most this season. Harper praised her for her leadership and being a great basketball player.
“Missouri Head Coach Kellie Harper says Raven Johnson is one that they’ve enjoyed watching from afar. Says she’s the leader of this SC team, a winner and just a terrific basketball player. She is glad she’s a senior though,” Claire Foley reported.
Johnson has become the fan favorite among the South Carolina crowd. Staley, who has witnessed it all up close, was asked about Johnson’s journey after the game.
“I mean, everybody in this building has loved up on Raven. And knowing it was going to be her last regular season home game, couldn’t go out any better way,” she said.
Staley pushed back on the noise surrounding Johnson throughout the season. She said that the noise inside the arena tonight proved that Johnson is loved by the fans and she has earned everything that she’s enjoying right now.
Dawn Staley is Going to Miss Raven Johnson
After the game against LSU, Staley said that she’ll miss Johnson the most from the current class when she goes to the WNBA. The Gamecocks’ head coach was asked about her comment after the Missouri win.
Staley said that Johnson is not only a great player, but she’s also very disciplined, leads the group with examples, and is very funny to be around.
“Some of the stuff that comes out of her mouth, it brings me joy. Like, it really brings me joy. And she’s just so mild-mannered. Like, she doesn’t have a, like, any ill-will to her. She’s just her. And she’s a joy to be around,” Staley said.
Staley said that there are a lot of things that make Johnson a great player to have on the team. But it’s her personality and how affectionate she is toward others that Staley will miss the most.
