Madina Okot Compared to Steph Curry by Coach Yo as Key Attribute Sparks Steep Praise

South Carolina Gamecocks catcher Madina Okot received high praise from Ole Miss Rebels head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin following Monday night’s game at Colonial Life Arena. In South Carolina’s 85-45 win, Okot was automatic from the 3-point line, making all three buckets she attempted from beyond the arc. The catcher finished the game with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

After the game, Yo praised Okot’s shooting skills, comparing her to Golden State Warriors legend Steph Curry, who is known for his excellent 3-point shooting.

“Yeah, when I saw her start making threes, I was like, ‘This is over for us,’” Yo said. “You know, it’s one thing to have to battle with her around the basket, but she started looking like Steph Curry. I was like, ‘We might as well pack it up.’ I just think they did a great job of giving her confidence. I always thought she was super talented.”

She referenced her time with Mississippi State, where she was considered a big threat from long range.

“I remember at Mississippi State, I was scared straight of her,” Yo said. “It makes a difference when you’re around the level of players she’s around. When you’re around championship players, you start to move like that and embody that identity, and I think she’s doing that. She always had all of these skills; it’s just really being brought out because now she’s with some really good players.”

Madina Okot “Back” After Earlier Slump in Season

Madina Okot struggled in terms of shooting, leading to head coach Dawn Staley taking her out of the starting lineup and bringing her off the bench, hoping it would help her find the rhythm and get back her confidence in January.

Once Okot was reinstated into the starting lineup, notably against her former school, Mississippi State, things clicked for her. She responded with multiple double-double performances, leading her to shoot the following message:

    “I’m back.”

The above two-word response came after her big game against Tennessee on Feb. 8, where she finished with 10 points and 16 rebounds in the 93-50 win.

“It’s normal for players to go through what I’m going through, or what I went through,” Okot said after win over Tennessee. “I’m just so grateful for my teammates and the coaching staff for being there for me. I needed the break to come off the bench. … I feel like I had too much pressure and (Staley) had to take it off of me for some time.”

Okot is averaging around 13.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, a consistent double-double threat for teams facing South Carolina.
