Kim Mulkey’s LSU offense made history in its first-round win against Jacksonville in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers crushed the Dolphins 116-58, recording a win with a margin of 58 points. This 58-point win margin is one of the largest in NCAA Women’s Tournament history.
Moreover, this was LSU’s 15th 100+ points game in a season, tying for the most in NCAA history. The only other team to do it was Long Beach State (1986-87). This was Mulkey’s 150th win at LSU, becoming the fastest in program history.
The offensive explosion was led by Flau’jae Johnson’s 20 points and Mikaylah Williams’ 18 points and 10 assists. Eight LSU players scored in double figures. Johnson & Co. scored 64 points in the first half alone. They also dominated on defense, forcing 28 turnovers and adding 18 steals.
LSU HC Kim Mulkey Takes Pride In Several Scoring Options
The 116-points scored were the most by the LSU offense in their postseason history. While addressing reporters after Friday night’s win, Kim Mulkey took pride in several scoring options on the LSU bench.
“The offense is not surprising. We’ve seen that all year… I’ve got a lot of scorers… We can score the ball,” Mulkey said.
Mikaylah Williams was pleased with the way the offense executed the plans on the floor.
“We came in trying to be disciplined, trying to share the ball, trying to get everybody involved, trying to get a lot of post touches. I think we came in and executed our game plan,” Williams said.
However, Mulkey expects growth on defense.
“We just have to keep committing to things defensively when you play great teams that are as good as you or better than you, and we’ve got to make sure that we show them turnovers. We’ve got to make sure the defensive help is there.”
The Tigers have turned over the ball 490 times and allowed opponents a total of 1033 rebounds this season. They need to better handle the ball if they want to go deep in the NCAA Tournament.
The LSU Tigers have advanced into the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where they will face No. 7 Texas Tech Red Raiders.
