Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong have led the UConn Huskies to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. They will face the North Carolina Tar Heels tomorrow at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
The UConn Huskies are the only undefeated team in the NCAA Tournament after 36 games. Going against the Tar Heels, who are 28-7, the Huskies are the favorites to win and proceed to the Elite Eight round.
Ahead of the UNC game, Fudd and Strong sat down for a media interaction. They’ve been teammates for two years, and they’ve developed a strong friendship, which was on display during the media interaction.
Fudd talked about how she’d play if Strong were on the other team and she was guarding her.
“I mean, I would probably lock Sarah up, so it wouldn’t be that much of a difference if she’s on the other team,” she said. “It would be kinda fun though…She might get a couple of rebounds.”
When Strong was asked the same question, she said she’d just let Fudd be great and keep her confidence high. Fudd then came back with some more banter directed at Strong.
“It’s a good thing I won’t be out there guarding you tomorrow,” she added.
The Huskies’ senior tried to give a high five to Strong before ending the press conference, but they just laughed and walked away. The camaraderie among the Huskies players has always been great. Strong and Fudd are no different.
Azzi Fudd is Chasing One Last Trophy with UConn
Fudd joined the program in 2021. A five-star recruit, she had offers from several great programs, including Kentucky, Texas, and Notre Dame, but she chose UConn. In the last five seasons, she has become one of the best players in the country.
Fudd’s individual on-court brilliance is matched by her trophy cabinet. She has won an NCAA title, NCAA Tournament MOP, First-team All-American, First-team All-Big East selections, as well as Gatorade National Player of the Year, and more.
Even though she has always been an integral part of the team, this is the first time that Fudd is the leader of the Huskies. Concluding her college career with another title would be the best thing to do in her final season.
“Players are people, and people are human. They’re affected by emotion in many different ways. I’m sure there’s a part of Azzi that’s unbelievably excited — it’s her last chance to get another national championship,” Geno Auriemma had said earlier this month.
Considering the way the Huskies are playing, Fudd’s second NCAA title doesn’t seem like a distant dream.
