Kim Mulkey and LSU suffered their third defeat of the season to Vic Schaefer’s Texas (77-64). LSU has been in sublime form of late. Despite being in the toughest conference, the SEC, they have maintained impressive momentum and a steady win rate. They have lost only three ranked games, to Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and now Texas.
LSU has a 21-3 record. Despite a good and promising season so far, one thing that might be of concern for Mulkey is that all three losses came in the conference. They are 7-3 in SEC play. They have yet to face the top of the table, South Carolina. The loss to Texas must’ve hurt.
LSU players have shared the responsibility. They have played like a team. Flau’jae Johnson has led from the front as she was always expected to. She leads the team in points with 14 per game. Amiya Joyner leads with 7.0 rebounds. Another star player, Mikaylah Williams, has led with 3.8 assists per game. Newest major addition to the squad this season, MiLaysia Fulwiley leads in steals with 3.2.
Last but not least, another new signing, Kate Koval, leads with 1.2 blocks. There have been few to no weaknesses. However, after the loss to Texas, Kim Mulkey pointed out some things she would want her team to improve on at the earliest.
“I think more than just the turnovers, obviously. I mean, your perimeter players have to count them up. We had 18, and 16 of those 18 were your main perimeter players. But it wasn’t just the turnovers. It was just poor shot selection. Just that’s as equivalent to me as a turnover. It’s just taking poor shots. When you play Texas, they’re going to be full-court press for 40 minutes, and it’s not going to uh go away, and you just got to take care of the ball and execute. And I just thought they just were good. They were you know, hungry and very effective,” Kim Mulkey said.
“Didn’t Madison shoot it over 20 times, didn’t she? Shot it almost 14 times. We did fine on those guys. I just thought their bench, correct me if I’m wrong, they scored like 64% of what they scored. So, their bench was very, very good. Sidberry didn’t miss a shot. Crump scores double figures. So their bench was very good tonight,” Mulkey mentioned.
Kim Mulkey Heaps Praise On Texas’ Aaliyah Crump
Kim Mulkey was full of praise and compliments for Aaliyah Crump after LSU lost to Texas, saying:
“I think she is a good size perimeter player. I think she probably played some four or at least we had our four player on her and she hit some mid-range and hit the three and uh but she also rebounded.”
“I’m not sure how many she ended up with. I’d have to look. But yeah, she had five rebounds. So, not only did she have the 16 points, five rebounds in the 23 and a half minutes that she played, she was special. She was very good,” she added.
