Head coach Dawn Staley isn’t buying South Carolina Gamecocks star Joyce Edwards’ reaction upon learning that she reached 1,000 points in five fewer games than WNBA star A’ja Wilson.
After scoring 21 points in South Carolina’s 88-45 win over Mississippi State, Edwards became just the third sophomore in the Gamecocks history to reach 1,000 points mark behind Shelia Foster and career scoring leader Wilson. Moreover, Edwards was faster than Wilson, having achieved the milestone in 64 games only.
When being reminded of the milestone, Edwards said:
“Oh, no, you know, you come to South Carolina to win. That’s all I try to do every game.”
A curious reporter asked if she was aware that she was closer to reaching 1,000 points mark. She denied, saying:
“Oh, no, you know, I don’t really think about that stuff, so.”
Extending the question, the reporter also asked if she knew that she broke the record in five fewer games than Wilson.
” Um, no, but that’s good,” Edwards added.
Later, in the same conference, when Staley was made aware that Edwards didn’t knew about both the milestones. The head coach didn’t buy the reaction from Edwards as she said:
“Joyce knows about everything. She knew how close she was. She knew when she was going to do it. I mean, it’s great. I mean, she can put the ball in the hole. And we’re not surprised at how quickly she got it. We’re just happy that, we’re just happy she’s on our team.”
Joyce Edwards Chimes in on Comparison With A’ja Wilson
A’ja Wilson is probably the best product South Carolina has given to the WNBA. After leaving South Carolina and joining the Las Vegas Aces, she has not missed a beat. She has won three WNBA titles, is two-times Finals MVP and four-times regular season MVP.
At the same time, Edwards is in the initial stages of her basketball career and was overwhelmed when the media started comparing her to a women’s basketball legend.
“Obviously, she’s a great player, I’m trying to be where she’s at,” Edwards said. “I don’t think it really means much because she accomplished so much more than me in basketball. Everyone’s goal is to be like her.”
Edwards has a long way to go, and right now her eye is on taking South Carolina into March Madness with the highest possible seed. Right now, the team is No. 3 in the country.
