With rumors of the Tennessee locker room imploding as several star players have announced their entry to the transfer portal, the school is about to lose its best recruiter to LSU. Assistant coach Gabe Lazo will be leaving Tennessee for Baton Rouge and joining Kim Mulkey’s staff, boosting her recruitment. This was revealed by LSU women’s sports insider Cory Diaz on X:
While Kim Mulkey is undoubtedly successful on the recruiting front, getting the No. 1 batch of recruits last year, Lazo is expected to boost that even more, with him being seen as the person responsible for Tennessee’s highly rated recruiting classes, which rivaled that of LSU, getting several five and four-star recruits like Mya and Mia Pauldo, the Pauldo twins.
Lazo used to coach for Mississippi State before being hired by Tennessee’s Kim Caldwell in 2024. He had largely focused on high school recruiting under Caldwell and delivered with some good signings. Now, he is seen to be the one to boost Kim Mulkey’s already prodigious high school recruiting and maybe send it into overdrive.
He was originally rumored to be taking over the head coaching job at Central Florida, but he ultimately joined Baton Rouge instead to be an assistant under the legendary Kim Mulkey.
Kim Mulkey Releases Statement on Gabe Lazo Hiring
Soon after it was revealed that Gabe Lazo would be joining her staff, Kim Mulkey released a statement on March 31 and praised his ability to recruit top talent.
“Gabe will be an outstanding addition to our staff,” Kim Mulkey said. “He has been an invaluable member of two SEC staffs with an unbelievable ability to teach the game and recruit the best players in the country. Gabe will impact our program at the highest level, and his unmatched work ethic will lead to great results on the court and on the recruiting trail.
She added that Lazo will not just be a recruiter but will also be doing some coaching and promised that his contributions will be “significant” for the Bayou Tigers.
