“Maybe I’m Doing a Bad Job”: Dan Hurley Jokingly Takes Blame for Geno Auriemma’s UConn Outbursts

Dan Hurley is often considered one of the most charismatic head coaches in all of NCAA basketball, and some might even call him one of the most volatile owing to his sudden outbursts on the sidelines, but perhaps his biggest competition in this department comes from within his own program, with UConn Huskies’ women’s head coach, Geno Auriemma, also being known for his temper lately.

Hurley’s interactions with Auriemma were a major topic of conversation as the UConn men’s basketball coach sat down for a hilarious interview with Caleb Pressley that gave fans a satirical view of how the duo might interact off the court.

“I’ve had a negative impact on Geno (Auriemma),” Hurley said after bursting out laughing at the initial question about their relationship.

“Geno’s helped me a lot and maybe I’m doing a bad job of him picking up on some of my post game tendencies.”

This isn’t the first time Hurley has referred to his relationship with Geno Auriemma in public like this. Following Auriemma’s spat with Dawn Staley on court during the NCAA tournament a few months ago, Hurley made a similar statement to reporters.

“Obviously, I’ve had a negative influence on Geno,” Hurley said.

“And it’s crazy, because Geno’s helped me so much,” Hurley went on. “…The way he handled the whole thing, such a stand-up guy, with the way he handled it with the statement, and he’s one of the classiest people.”

Dan Hurley’s Comments on Tarris Reed Jr.

The UConn coach recently spoke about Tarris Reed Jr. at the NBA summer league, highlighting how initial struggles turned out to be worth it.

“Getting that guy to play with an identity, a dominance around the basket, becoming a great screener, rim protector, rebounder. Getting him to do things that aren’t very sexy at a championship level, it’s made him a guy who played in the Final Four and became a first-round pick. It was a brutal process, but it was worth it in the end,” Hurley said.

With a new season about to begin, Hurley will hope that his Huskies can be competitive at the top once again.
