USC Trojans freshman Jazzy Davidson has had a special season and she was duly recognized recently. The freshman was named the USBWA Tamika Catchings National Freshman Player of the Year. Her fellow teammate JuJu Watkins, who is recovering from a torn ACL, shared a two-word loving reaction upon learning about the freshman’s latest feat.
On Wednesday, after Davidson was honored with the Freshman of the Year award, Watkins took to Instagram to reshare a post from the Trojans’ official Instagram account, a childhood picture of the USC freshman. Watkins added the following reaction:
“my FOTYY.”

The honor comes after Davidson led USC in every major statistical category this season. She averaged 17.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.0 steals, and 2.0 blocks per game. She became the only Division I player (men’s or women’s) to average at least 2 steals and 2 blocks per game.
Moreover, when needed most, Davidson came up with a pair of clutch 3-pointers down the stretch in the overtime win against the Clemson Tigers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. She scored 31 points, six rebounds and five assists to become the first freshman in 25 years to hit that stat line in her NCAA Tournament debut.
She also set the record for most points by a USC freshman in NCAA Tournament play. Davidson became just the second USC player ever to win this prestigious USBWA freshman honor. Guess who the first freshman was? It was none other than Watkins.
Jazzy Davidson Learning from JuJu Watkins Behind the Scenes
USC head coach Lindsay Gottlieb revealed that Jazzy Davidson has learned a great deal from JuJu Watkins, who has been out in the last two seasons. Davidson herself shared the learnings she has implied in her game from Watkins.
“I think the biggest thing for me was more so slowing down, slowing the game down, playing at my pace,” she said. “Reading the defense, reading the second line, third line of defense and once I kind of got that down, just letting it all click.”
Next year, USC will be a force to deal with. Since Watkins would be returning, and Davidson also experienced, the Trojans will be looked as a national contender.
