“Don’t Bore Me”: Kim Mulkey Reveals LSU’s New Pre-Game Tact to Get Players Ready for Duke Clash

LSU Tigers head coach Kim Mulkey recently gave an insight into how she approaches a game behind the scenes. The Tigers have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament after beating Jacksonville in the first round and Texas Tech in the second round. The Tigers will now face the Duke Blue Devils in the Sweet Sixteen.

Ahead of the matchup on Friday, Mulkey joined 104.5 ESPN’s Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn to discuss the game against Duke. In the age of analytics, Mulkey revealed the way Lady Tigers prepare for the game, including how much time they spent in the film room to get a read on their opponents.

“Don’t bore me for hours and hours and hours in the film room because you’re going to lose me,” Mulkey said. “Get to the point. Show me the amount of film we need to see. Show it to me. Talk to me about a scouting report. What do we need to do individually? What do we need to do collectively? And let’s get on the floor and let’s go do it. And I’ve always taken that approach with me.”

Upon watching the film, Mulkey shared that her coaching staff read the opponents’ strengths and weaknesses to prepare a plan for the game.

“We’re going to get in that film room and we’re going to have it broken down in every area, their fast breaks, their defensive philosophy,” Mulkey said. “Show how they defend. How many defenses do they use? Transition defense, are they good at that?

“You show all the little facets of the game and then you go over the written scouting report and you make them talk to you. You make them read what each one of those players’ strengths and weaknesses are because it’s the players that they’re going to have to guard.”

Mulkey added that each one of her players is given six to eight points which they need to focus on or implement during the game. Finally, Mulkey will tell her players to play collectively on the floor. Meanwhile, just before the game, she would play a game to make sure they are thinking about basketball all the time.

When and Where to Watch Kim Mulkey’s LSU vs Duke?

The LSU Tigers will face the Duke Blue Devils in the Sweet Sixteen on Friday. The game will be played in Sacramento, California, with tip-off time scheduled for 9:00 pm CT. The ESPN App or ESPN+ can be used to stream the game live.
