Dawn Staley is always around to support the players who play for her, and it clearly isn’t limited to their time with the South Carolina Gamecocks. The legendary head coach is constantly in touch with players long after they have graduated, and that trends seems to be following with Raven Johnson too.
Now playing for the Indiana Fever in the WNBA, Raven Johnson has already got off to a flying start at the highest level of women’s basketball, and excitedly revealed that she’ll have members of her college team supporting her as Fever take on Atlanta Dream on Saturday.
From Atlanta, Georgia herself, this is a big moment for Raven Johnson, who will technically be returning to the place she called home, and mentioned that Dawn Staley will be among those cheering her on as she steps foot on court.
“How many people? It’s going to be a lot of people (in attendance), and not even that, a lot of Gamecock people going to be there, because there’s lots of Gamecocks on the floor, and Coach Staley is going to be there, so I’m glad to see her, but I’m excited to go back home, it’s going to be loud, hopefully they’ll chant for us (Fever) and not Atlanta Dream, so I’m excited to see what it brings.”
Dawn Staley and Raven Johnson Share a Close Relationship
It should come as no surprise that Dawn Staley will be in attendance to cheer for her one of her top players at the South Carolina Gamecocks in Raven Johnson. After all, the duo spent several years together forging a close bond and being rooted in the idea that winning was what mattered at South Carolina.
Johnson has constantly shared her admiration for Coach Staley, but the legendary head coach herself said she would miss Raven Johnson the most as she left college for the WNBA.
“She’s probably the one that I’ll miss the most out of all the players that I’ve coached,” Staley said earlier this year at a news conference.
With her mentor in attendance, Raven Johnson will be in prime shape to deliver a strong display against the Atlanta Dream.
