After the LSU Tigers were stunned by the Duke Blue Devils in the Sweet 16, a rumor started circulating regarding Kim Mulkey’s potential retirement. Upon learning the rumor, the Tigers’ head coach gave a clear idea of her stance on retirement.
Mulkey is not retiring. She denied the rumors, saying:
“I’m not retiring,” Mulkey said. “I don’t know where that came from. I’m only 63, and I’m healthy with a few stents in my heart; my doctors say I’m good to go. I have no clue where that stuff comes from. I’ve never, ever told anybody that.”
Mulkey is frustrated by people writing false things without proper knowledge. Instead of thinking about her future, Mulkey is concerned with the future of the program after two of their assistant coaches have taken up jobs someplace else. Assistant Gary Redus became the head coach of Rutgers and took Daphne Mitchell with him.
“There is no retiring,” she added. “I think that’s used a lot in recruiting. I think as we get older as coaches, they want to say, ‘Well, how much longer is she going to be in the game?’ I’m gonna be in this game unless LSU fires me (or) until I can’t put a product on the floor that’s competitive or my health fails me. It’s just a flat-out lie.”
Mulkey wishes to continue at LSU, joining the program in 2021-22. She’s a four-time national champion. She wants to win her fifth national title with LSU and so she iterates once again:
“Y’all make sure you put that out there. Not retiring.”
Kim Mulkey Declines To Give Reaction on LSU Rehiring Controversial Head Coach
On the men’s side, LSU has made changes in its coaching staff. After failing to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers have dismissed head coach Matt McMahon. In response, they are bringing back a familiar yet controversial face into the fold.
The Tigers have hired former head coach Will Wade once again after his lone season at NC State. Wade is the same coach who was fired by the Tigers in March 2022 after he allegedly committed five NCAA Division I violations. Wade was allegedly involved in illegal recruiting activities.
When Mulkey was heading out for the Sweet 16 encounter against Duke, she was asked about this rehiring. Mulkey responded:
“I’m just gonna focus on my team.”
Mulkey wants to take no part in any controversy that could possibly come up with her reaction.
