Kim Mulkey is one of the most respected coaches in women’s college basketball. She has been coaching since 1985, and in these 40 years, she has had an esteemed career. She started her career at Louisiana Tech as an assistant and then an associate head coach.
She had her longest stint when she served as the head coach at Baylor. After 21 long years with the Bears, Mulkey was appointed as the LSU head coach. She won four national championships in 2005, 2012, 2019, and 2023. She has also qualified for five Final Four appearances with different schools. Her most famous championship came when Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark clashed, giving us the most heated rivalry and an infamous battle between two of the biggest stars of women’s basketball.
Kim Mulkey is respected for intensity, passion, and dedication. So it is always an honor for people to be compared with her in any conversation. Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly was recently compared to Mulkey, and he reacted to becoming the Big 12’s all-time winningest coach with 296 wins, tying with Mulkey.
When asked about the milestone, Fennelly deflected the praise, offering high respect to Kim Mulkey and noting that he shouldn’t be mentioned in the same conversation, given all she has accomplished.
“I should never be in the same discussion with Kim Mulkey. The only reason that I tied Kim Mulkey for anything is I coached in the Big 12 longer than her. No, that record is a longevity record. It’s not a record of anything close to what she’s done. I am not trying to be humble. That’s a fact. I mean I coached against Baylor for a long time, did a lot of those wins she got against us. A lot of them. And there’s a lot more Baylor over Iowa State than Iowa State over Baylor. So I appreciate you bringing it up,” Bill Fennelly said.
Iowa State’s Season So Far
Iowa State Cyclones are having a decent season. They stand 10th in the Big 12 with a 16-5 record. Most good things that have come in Iowa State’s season have been because of Audi Crooks and Jada Williams.
Crooks is pulling career-best numbers with 26.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. Williams, on the other hand, is averaging 13.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 7.6 assists.
