MiLaysia Fulwiley announced her decision to join Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers through the transfer portal last April, leaving the South Carolina Gamecocks behind. With South Carolina, she averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game over two seasons and earned SEC honors, including Sixth Woman of the Year.
Fulwiley competed in her 20th game with LSU on Thursday, contributing 23 points, four assists and five steals in a 98-54 win against Texas A&M. After the win, Fulwiley talked about how she is settling in with her new team.
“Um, I feel like it’s been going good,” Fulwiley told reporters. “I mean, not perfect, not the way I probably wanted it to but I’m getting better, and I see my growth in areas that don’t show up on a stat sheet. So I’m just proud of myself and how far I’ve come, and how I continue to try to get better each and every day.”
With the win over Texas A&M, Kim Mulkey’s team improved to 18-2 on the season and they are ranked No. 6 in college basketball.
Fulwiley is averaging 14.5 points on 50.5% shooting to go with 3.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists this season.
Kim Mulkey’s “Growing Up” Remark For MiLaysia Fulwiley
When MiLaysia Fulwiley joined LSU, head coach Kim Mulkey spoke highly about the addition, citing her playmaking ability, scoring talent, and overall creativity. However, earlier this month, when LSU lost 80-78 to the No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats, Mulkey wanted to see improvement in Fulwiley’s game.
Fulwiley just managed two points, one rebound and one assist in 16 minutes of playing time. The low minutes were because of the foul trouble she found herself in. This didn’t sit well with Mulkey, who expected more maturity and game awareness out of Fulwiley.
“Foul trouble always takes you out of your rhythm. And I didn’t get her off the floor quick enough to keep her from getting that third foul. I was trying; I had somebody at the table, and I decided I’m not going to call a timeout right there to get her off the floor,” Mulkey said. “But some of that you have to know how many fouls you have. And so part of that is growing up, and knowing how many fouls that you have,” she added.
Fulwiley has taken Mulkey’s advice and worked on her game, indicating progress on her side.
