Caitlin Clark solidified her place as the greatest college basketball player ever. The number of records that she broke in her four years is something unseen and might not be repeated. She is the all-time leading scorer with 3,951 points. She is also the all-time leader in 3-pointers made. She stands alone as the player with 3,300+ points, 1,000+ assists, and 800+ rebounds.
Just looking at the insane numbers, it seems impossible to replicate what Clark has done. Not only in terms of stats, but also in terms of the impact on women’s basketball. She brought a lot of attention to women’s basketball, first in college, then in the WNBA with her playing style. Many believe what she is doing is similar to what Stephen Curry did to change the course of basketball.
There are still many talented players in women’s college basketball after Clark left for the WNBA. Azzi Fudd, JuJu Watkins, Sarah Strong, Hannah Hidalgo, Olivia Miles, and Lauren Betts are the usual names. But one player who has made a solid impact in her two years in college, but was underrated up until this season, is Vanderbilt’s Mikayla Blakes. Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo has shared some inspired words for her upcoming opponent.
“She can score the ball in so many different ways, obviously, we all know she is the number 1 scorer in the country. But just the way she is able to put the ball in the hoop, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. You know, like Caitlin type of level. But she can score on all three levels, whether it’s getting all the way to the basket, or mid-ranger or a three. So, of course, it is always tough to guard,” Hidalgo said about Mikayla Blakes.
Clark is the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer with 3,951 career points, but through her first two seasons, Blakes trails Clark by just one point. Blakes is the NCAA’s leading scorer this season, currently averaging 27 points per game.
Players with the most points after their sophomore season:
- Kelsey Mitchell – 1,762 PTS
- Juju Watkins – 1,709 PTS
- Caitlin Clark – 1,662 PTS
- Mikayla Blakes – 1,661 PTS
- Sheryl Swoopes – 1,645 PTS
