UConn is one of the few schools that have strong basketball programs in both men’s and women’s college basketball. While Geno Auriemma’s women’s team have won 12 national championships, the men’s team has also won six titles since 1999. Two of those came back-to-back under Dan Hurley in 2023 and 2024.
Both Auriemma and Hurley have a lot of respect for each other. They have often spoken up in support of each other and have had discussions in podcasts. Recently, Auriemma spoke up for Hurley’s team. Both UConn teams have been flying this season.
Geno Auriemma was recently asked about the men’s 91-84 loss to Creighton on Feb. 18. He didn’t take kindly to the people who criticized Hurley’s team.
Geno Auriemma was asked about appreciating the success of the UConn men’s & women’s team this season and recalled the “dumbass” things people wrote after the men lost to Creighton
“I certainly hope so. I also think human nature being what it is, I think there’s a a feeling of it’s expected. Uh, you read and you hear some of the comments after our men lost to Creighton and you want to shake your head and go, how can one team have that that many to follow them? Like it’s not possible,” he said.
“It’s like if you wrote a book and we lost to Creighton and said, ‘Um, write a book about how many dumbass things people could say, it still wouldn’t be as dumbass as what I read or what I heard after they lost to Creighton.’ And those same people last night already booked their tickets to the Final Four and their championship rings.”
Auriemma didn’t stop there and said:
“So, it’s just Connecticut basketball and it means a lot to a lot of people, but it can’t be life and death every game that’s played. It can’t be you’re the best team in the world when you win a game. And it can’t be, you know, everybody sucks. Why is this kid on scholarship when you lose a game? I mean, fans, real fans don’t do that. ”
Geno Auriemma has been at the pinnacle of coaching for over 40 years now. His journey to being one of the greatest basketball coaches has been an inspiration to all.
