Geno Auriemma’s UConn Huskies finished their 11th undefeated regular season with a dominant 85-49 win over St John’s Red Storm. The Huskies won all 20 of their conference matchups and registered 31 wins overall.
Several factors make this run even more impressive. They won all their games with an average margin of 38 points. The Huskies had the 13th toughest schedule out of 363 teams and still managed to stay undefeated.
Before they head into the final stretch of the season, coach Auriemma had some special visitors at the Werth Family UConn Basketball Champions Center. UConn and WNBA legends Diana Taurasi and Tina Charles reunited with their former coach.
“that’s a lot of national championships and gold medals wandering around Werth,” UConn Women’s Basketball posted several pictures from their visit on Instagram.
Despite the unbeaten run this season, Auriemma knows that the job is far from done. Their regular-season status isn’t going to do much when they start their run for the title this year. He recently spoke on the bigger task ahead.
“Generally, the best team usually wins the national championship, but not always,” Auriemma said. “It’s the team who comes together at the right time. We’ve got a great group. We can do a lot of different things, and our defense has been really, really good all season long.”
Auriemma believes that the biggest challenge for his team now will be staying in the right mindset. And as long as they do that, the Huskies have a strong chance of lifting the title yet again. Having Taurasi and Charles at the camp would’ve boosted the team’s confidence because they know what it takes to go back-to-back.
Geno Auriemma Said the NCAA Tournament Isn’t Going to be Easy
Auriemma has been in this situation several times in his illustrious career. He has been the head coach of the UConn Huskies since 1985 and has won 12 NCAA Division I tournaments.
He said that once the NCAA Tournament starts, the unbeaten regular season run isn’t going to matter a lot.
“When the NCAA Tournament begins, it certainly is not going to be as easy as we experienced it last season,” he said. “You know, I think somebody like Paige (Bueckers) can do that. But we have enough good players to have as good a chance as anybody else out there to win a national championship.”
Auriemma understands that he isn’t the only one with a great team in the tournament. The key to UConn’s success would be playing the right game at the right time.
