Cooper Flagg’s rookie season has reset a lot of the Dallas Mavericks’ plans, and now Kyrie Irving’s future is also in question. The team’s front office traded Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis, which blew up badly after the now-Washington Wizards center suffered multiple injuries. Now, the management looks to build around Flagg, and Irving is the only veteran on the roster.
Gilbert Arenas talked about the Kyrie Irving situation on his show and criticized the front office’s decision to hold on to the 2016 NBA champion’s contract. He said:
“Because is Cooper Flagg and Kyrie a championship caliber team? If it’s not a championship caliber team what are you holding on to that kind of money for. You might as well blow the whole team up. You have last year number 1 pick, knowing the way the basketball Gods work you going to get a top 3 pick.
Worst case scenario you going to get the 4th pick. Most likely you are going to get Caleb Willam’s from UNC. So you are going to have a nice young group. There is no point of holding on to Kyrie contract if you are not going to win a championship.”
There can be debates about the Irving and Flagg duo’s caliber to make the Mavs a championship contender next season. Even though the 9-time All-Star has taken an extended hiatus to recover from an ACL injury, he will be back and make a bid for the title again next season.
However, Arenas and his crew were convinced that the team should release Irving’s contract and acquire young prospects in future picks. Can the two propel the Mavs to a title contention?
Can the Mavs duo of Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg work in future?
Kyrie Irving’s basketball skills are second to none, and Cooper Flagg’s shooting versatility is an example to youngsters. However, there is one issue. Both of them are elite shot creators and on-ball players, but they need a proper point guard to facilitate the offense.
The two alone might not be enough to win the championship. Either they have to acquire a pass-first point guard in the draft or get someone in the offseason. For now, the Mavs management has decided to stay put.
