Dawn Staley Reveals Reason Behind South Carolina’s Complete Roster Retention

Dawn Staley has managed to do something that head coaches find increasingly difficult to pull off in the world of college basketball, and that’s how to stop players from leaving for greener pastures.

With the transfer portal bringing the temptation of a better deal and NIL supporting that argument, players often tend to use this to their benefit, with teams and coaches being left in the lurch ahead of a new season.

But that isn’t the case for Dawn Staley and her South Carolina Gamecocks this season, as she has managed to keep her entire roster of players with eligibility remaining, and she explained her reasoning as to why that might be the case.

“I think culturally speaking, our kids are happy,” Dawn Staley revealed to The State.

“Their parents are happy. When you’re in a situation where maybe everything isn’t 100% as you visualized, but when you’re genuinely happy, and when you have a voice, and when you have a path to success, it makes it a little bit easy to stay where you know what’s happening versus trying to go somewhere else and figure things out.”

To add to the impressive achievement of keeping her roster intact, Coach Staley is set to add five more players this year, with Oliviyah Edwards, Kaeli Wynn, Jerzy Robinson, Kelsi Andrews, and Justine Loubens all set to add more firepower to the team.

Which Players Are Going To Be Key For Dawn Staley In The Coming Season?

There was plenty to be excited about last season for Gamecocks fans, even as they narrowly missed out on the NCAA Tournament crown, but they’ll be looking to go a step further, especially with a fully fit Chloe Kitts set to take center stage.

Alongside Kitts, Tessa Johnson and Agot Makeer will also be in the spotlight, with freshman five-star Oliviyah Edwards set to command the world’s attention as she makes her bow at South Carolina.
