Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks have signed numerous 5-star recruits over the years. Another 5-star player has now committed to the Gamecocks and is ready to give her best for Staley, who couldn’t be happier.
To welcome Oliviyah Edwards, Staley put the fans in the dark and went to X to post her signature phrase whenever a new signing joins Staley’s daycare.
“A birdie just flew in the nest!!” she captioned the post with a GIF of a cock. She did that earlier as well when Jordan Lee joined South Carolina from SEC rivals Texas.
Dawn Staley has turned South Carolina into a powerhouse program since she arrived in 2008. In the last 18 years, South Carolina has won three national championships. Staley, in that time, has nurtured some great talent: from A’ja Wilson, Aliyah Boston, and Kamilla Cardoso to MiLaysia Fulwiley, Ta’Niya Latson, and Tessa Johnson.
For players, it is an honor to play for the South Carolina Gamecocks under the leadership of Dawn Staley. Staley’s team knows which players will excel, and they hardly miss.
Why did Oliviyah Edwards recommit to South Carolina from Tennessee?
In May 2025, Edwards announced her decision to commit to Tennessee. However, the Lady Vols had a rather disappointing season and lost a lot of players to the transfer portal. The disappointment increased when Oliviyah Edwards took a decision for her future.
Earlier this month, Oliviyah Edwards de-committed and made herself available in the transfer portal again. After requesting a release from Tennessee, she visited Texas and Louisville.
Edwards visited South Carolina on April 14 and instantly found a special connection with Dawn Staley. Just 10 days later, she officially announced that she would be committing to the South Carolina Gamecocks. She has proved her worth in high school.
She averaged 30 points, 25 rebounds, and 4 assists per game in the past season at Lincoln High School. Yes, 25 rebounds per game. She has also shown that she has the capability to dunk with ease. All in all, she seems to be the perfect addition to Dawn Staley’s South Carolina.
