Dawn Staley Presents Opposing View After Kim Caldwell Throws Tennessee Team Under the Bus

South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley has reacted to Kim Caldwell criticizing her players. On Sunday, Feb. 8, Staley and her Gamecocks beat Kim Caldwell’s Tennessee Lady Volunteers 93-50 on the former’s home floor, the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina.

During the post-game press conference, Caldwell called out her players and urged them to play better in their upcoming conference games. Staley was later asked about this, and she offered up some veteran advice for Caldwell.

“For me, I probably wouldn’t say it publicly. That’s one. Two, you just got to, you know, get your team to buy in, and sometimes it’s tricking them ’cause it is a game. It’s a game that you really have to balance and play with the players because they know they played like, -ish, right? They know they did. Sometimes you need to bring what good happened,” Staley shared.

“If you could find some good in it, ‘Hey, this is, if we did more of this,’ some of that might just kind of relax them a little bit ’cause competitors know when they don’t play well. Competitors know when they need to change their mindsets. And, you need the majority. You need the majority of your team thinking the same way, and it has to be positive. If it’s negative, you’re gonna get negative results. So, I would start from there,” she concluded.

The reason why Caldwell lashed out at her team during her media availability is that the Lady Volunteers were blown out by South Carolina, 93-50. Staley and company now hold an overall record of 24-2 (10-1 SEC) this season, as they stay atop the SEC standings. For Tennessee, they fall to a record of 15-6 (7-2 SEC).

Kim Caldwell Believes Her Team Quit Against The South Carolina Gamecocks

In the trending statement from Kim Caldwell, she said her team flat-out quit in their loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks. This came during Caldwell’s post-game interviews, wherein she was asked about her overall thoughts on her team’s performance.

“We just had a lot of quit in us tonight, and that’s been something that’s been consistent with our team is we are not comfortable and things don’t go our way, and I have a team that’ll just quit on you. And you can’t do that in big games. You can’t do that anytime in the SEC, but you certainly can’t do that at a program like this,” Caldwell said.
