Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks and Kim Caldwell’s Tennessee Volunteers recently played an amazing game of basketball. However, it was only amazing for one side, the Gamecocks.
South Carolina dominated the proceedings and won 93-50 against a struggling Tennessee. Tennessee already had a pretty beat-up record against the Gamecocks, and now they have lost nine games out of their last 10.
Dawn Staley’s team put up a commanding performance as Ta’Niya Latson, Joyce Edwards, Raven Johnson, Tessa Johnson, and Madina Okot, the entire starting 5, got into double digits. Latson led the Gamecocks with 21 points, and Edwards was a close second with 20. Okot finished with an impressive double-double with 15 rebounds and 10 points. Alicia Tournebize and Ayla McDowell also contributed with 8 and 7 points, respectively.
As for Tennessee, it was a disappointing outing for everyone. Sisters Mia and Mya Pauldo combined for 3 points. Talaysia Cooper scored 17 points to lead the Volunteers, but it was far from enough. The 43-point gap between South Carolina and Tennessee is what would’ve hurt them the most. It clearly upset Tennessee head coach Kim Caldwell.
“I have a team that will quit on (you), and you can’t do that in big games—or any time in the SEC. But you certainly can’t do that in this program,” Kim Caldwell bluntly threw her team under the bus.
Fans React to Kim Caldwell Throwing Her Team Under The Bus
Kim Caldwell was obviously upset with how the game unfolded. She could not hold her emotions in the post-game conference and had a blunt response. However, this reaction wasn’t considered acceptable by most fans.
“They don’t respect you Kim and it shows. U aren’t good enough to make them believe in you. She should be on the hot seat. If we don’t see improvement by end of the season it’s time to move on. Bring in a coach that can demand discipline,” one fan made blunt assessment.
“We lost a generational coach for this lol,” another commented.
“She needs a whole new team honestly they act like they don’t care at all which sucks for her,” one fan showed support for Kim Caldwell.
“If she doesn’t fix team by tournament she has to go,” another said.
“No leadership. As key returnees, Cooper and Spearman needed to be leaders and neither have. This team has been lost and the refusal to try and get the ball inside is infuriating and shows Caldwell doesn’t have the pulse of the team. No need for this team to take the amount of 3’s,” another explained.
“That would be the ultimate slap in the face as a player. Your own coach saying you quit. Damn,” one fan claimed.
