Which Caitlin Clark Record is Mikayla Blakes Closing in on? Vanderbilt Star’s NCAA Tournament Display Captures Eyeballs

In her team’s most recent postseason game, Vanderbilt Commodores guard Mikayla Blakes broke a scoring record in her program’s history. Also, she is now on the verge of breaking a couple of more records.

On Saturday, March 21, Blakes and the rest of coach Shea Ralph’s Vanderbilt Commodores faced coach Chelsea Banbury’s High Point Panthers in the first round of Regional 1 in Fort Worth of the March Madness.

Blakes proceeded to bedazzle the home crowd at the Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee. In a post on X/Twitter by @trendyhoopstars, it was revealed that Blakes is just 27 points away from surpassing former Iowa Hawkeyes superstar Caitlin Clark for third place on the NCAA’s all-time points through two seasons list. Blakes is 24 points away from overlapping former Arizona Wildcats guard Aari McDonald as the all-time sophomore leading scorer.

Blakes dropped a game-high 30 points on an efficient 11-for-16 overall clip, to go along with three rebounds and five assists in 29 minutes of playing time on Saturday. With Blakes’ awe-inspiring performance, she helped her team win convincingly by 41 points, 102-61, as the Commodores eliminated the Panthers from the Big Dance and moved on to the second round.

Mikayla Blakes Credits Her Teammates And Coaches For Her Program Single-Season Scoring Record

In a post uploaded by @marchmadnesswbb on Instagram, Mikayla Blakes was captured during her courtside post-game interview.

The Somerset, New Jersey, native was asked about her individual accomplishments, since Blakes also broke her program’s single-season scoring record, and how her team fared after their premature 2026 SEC tournament exit. She handed all the flowers to her teammates and coaches.

“ I mean, it means a lot. I didn’t even know I broke that record today, but I’m super thankful, and I couldn’t do it without my teammates and staff, so I love them… I just think we were just so excited to play. We’ve been doing, having practice for two weeks. Great. And we’ve just been wanting to play somebody else, and I feel like we came out with a lot of energy and we started the game on the right foot, which we didn’t in the SEC tournament,” Blakes said.
