Geno Auriemma is one of the most successful basketball coaches in the history of the game. He has been a coach for over 40 years now, and in that time at UConn, he has won 12 national championships. He has made his own legacy with the Huskies, a legacy that not many coaches might ever be able to replicate.
In his esteemed career, he has coached some of the greatest players in the basketball world. Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart, Sue Bird, Rebecca Lobo, Napheesa Collier, Paige Bueckers, and now Azzi Fudd are just a few. Most recently, two of his disciples crossed over their podcasts and had an extensive discussion.
Breanna Stewart made NCAA history when her UConn team won 4 national championships back-to-back. She knows what it feels like to win under Geno Auriemma, and so does Azzi Fudd after last season. But not many players can say they have experienced 4 straight. So when someone like Breanna Stewart gives advice, you listen.
“The pressure was last year, you know what I mean? Because it was like you guys hadn’t won in like a long time. Like it was like they hadn’t won since I left, which that was pressure on me that I didn’t want either. So appreciate that. Um, but now it’s like, you know, you know what it feels like to win,” Stewart gave advice to Azzi Fudd at 4:36.
“You have that like in the back of your mind and that confidence is what you take to the next year. That’s how I felt of like especially after winning our first, it was like, oh, we know how to do this now. Like we know coach’s mind games and CD is going to be talking about all this other stuff and it’s like as long as you just lock in and you stay with your five on the court, you’re going to be good,” She added.
