UConn Huskies star Azzi Fudd is one of the most talented players in college basketball. However, the only setback in her career has been injuries. For the majority of her career, she had limited play time due to multiple injuries. Fortunately for her, last season she played most of her program’s games, as she and her girlfriend Paige Bueckers guided UConn to its record 12th national championship.
After Bueckers became the No. 1 draft pick for the Dallas Wings, Fudd was the natural candidate for the leadership position for Geno Auriemma. People’s Princess, as she is widely recognized, accepted, and has been fulfilling that role with some aplomb. Auriemma trusts Fudd and has a confined role for her. UConn is unbeaten with a 17-0 record in the Big East and a 28-0 overall record.
In 28 games, she has averaged 18 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 3 assists. These are her career-best numbers, and as far as coach Auriemma is concerned, she is doing her job to the best of her capabilities. This season, her minutes per game average is also the career best, 28.8 minutes. Just like Bueckers, Azzi also chose to play her redshirt senior season. And now her senior day is upon her.
“It feels good, Carolina and I were talking about it, and knowing that it’s the last one, there’s no more after this. But I feel like being on the other side of this is less sad. We were talking about all the other years, oh my gosh, this person’s leaving, this person’s leaving, I am so upset. But now it’s like we still have so much season left. This is exciting, what we have done here has been so much fun so it feels a little different,” Azzi Fudd said.
Azzi Fudd Talks About UConn Huskies’ Rest of the Squad Ahead of Her Senior Day
Azzi Fudd recently revealed that the rest of the UConn squad is busy making bets on who is going to cry and who is not. Fudd added that she is making her teammates do things according to her wishes, as she uses the “only 2 months left” line to get her way.
The reporter then asked where she stands on the betting list. She admitted that she thinks she will cry when the moment comes.
“I haven’t really like been emotional at all this year about anything. I haven’t really thought about it. Um, so I’m like when I do it’s going to hit me like a truck, and so I’m glad that the ceremony’s after the game and I don’t have to worry about it before the game,” Azzi said.
