Agot Makeer joined the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2025. A five-star recruit, Makeer has made a good impression in her freshman season. She is averaging 7.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
Makeer shoots over 46% from the field. In over 19 minutes per game, she has made her presence felt, especially in the NCAA Tournament. Every time she comes off the bench, Makeer has put up crucial performances.
In the Elite Eight matchup against the TCU Horned Frogs, she came off the bench for 18 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. In the Final Four against UConn, Makeer had 14 points, second highest for her team, with four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
While she is making a name for herself and is slowly becoming a household name, Makeer’s family life isn’t well-known among fans. She is the daughter of Kevin Brooks and Betsy Birmingham.
Her parents worked at North Dakota State University (NDSU) for 20 years before moving to Thunder Bay, Ontario, in 2018, where they became involved with Lakehead University. They were faculty members at NDSU.
Birmingham was a professor of English. She later became the interim dean of the law school at Lakehead University. Brooks was a professor and chair of the English department at NDSU. He later directed the master’s program in social justice studies at Lakehead.
Makeer’s parents were always supportive of her basketball career, and they encouraged her to pursue her passion. With the help of their efforts and her hard work and talent, Makeer is set to play for the national title in her freshman season.
Diana Taurasi on the Dawn Staley-Geno Auriemma Drama
After South Carolina’s Final Four win against the UConn Huskies, the two head coaches got into a heated exchange. In the final second of the game, Staley was seen walking up to Auriemma to shake hands.
Within seconds, they got into a verbal altercation, which might’ve turned ugly if they weren’t separated by players, staff, and refs. Since then, that has been the biggest topic of discussion in college basketball.
Diana Taurai recently chimed in on the ongoing discussion.
“You can put whatever label you want, and you can say whatever you want about the situation. But to me, it was two people competing at the highest level. They have tremendous respect for each other,” she said.
Regardless of what has been said about Coach Geno and Staley, there’s no denying that they’re fierce competitors and have a lot of respect for each other.
