The Golden State Valkyries managed to tie the regular-season series with the Indiana Fever after Veronica Burton had a stellar night. However, given the popularity of Caitlin Clark in the WNBA, several headlines still included Clark. Veronica’s sister, Kayla Burton, came to her sister’s support on X, sharing one of such headlines and calling out Veronica’s absence, though she had a big game against the Fever superstar.
A headline featured Clark with Veronica on the side, but the Valkyries guard’s sister wasn’t impressed and pointed out the lack of emphasis on Veronica’s stats and achievements in the game. Kayla wrote:
This is the headline after that game? As (purple) 22’s sister I’m personally offended 😭💀
In another post, Kayla defended her sister’s legendary performance and highlighted the importance of that game for Veronica. She wrote:
“Because me sister (in this same picture) also set a milestone with her entire stat-line being the first player with those numbers to do so in franchise history, and she won… yet this is the headline. That’s why, Mike.”
Notably, the above posts have been deleted by the users. However, users began to contradict Kayla’s argument, stating that superstars got the headline because that was how sports media worked. One took a brutal dig at Kayla and wrote:
“Kayla, superstars get the headlines. That’s how sports media work. At least your sis made the graphic w/Caitlin! Now you all can frame this pic in your homes & hopefully one day Caitlin Clark can sign it for you!”
Veronica scored 25 points and six rebounds, along with five blocks, and made a big impact on both ends of the floor. The Valkyries just managed to edge the Fever in the last play and contained Clark, who could just score on three of her 12 shot attempts. Besides the team’s loss, the Iowa native set two more records in the game, but Veronica’s sister believed it didn’t deserve a headline.
Veronica Burton’s sister compares her performance to Caitlin Clark’s records
Caitlin Clark became the fastest player to reach 500 assists. She achieved this feat in 59 games and also surpassed Courtney Vandersloot as the all-time WNBA assists per game leader. When a fan shared that Clark also made two more records, which were deserving of a headline over Veronica Burton’s performance in the game, Kayla expressed her thoughts and wrote:
“Headlines tell the story of the night. While a great stat and accomplishment, it did not tell the story. Especially with that picture.”
The Valkyries came up with some tight defense in the paint that made it difficult for everyone in the Fever’s starters to score. Burton and Co. blocked a total of 11 shots in the game compared to five by the Fever.
Meanwhile, rookie Raven Johnson had a breakout game, as she contributed 16 points in 21 minutes off the bench, making 7-of-10 shots from the field. They will now have a rematch with the Portland Fire next, after the Fever won the last matchup, 90-73, when Clark did not play. The team will look to return to winning ways.
