Sophie Cunningham recently became one of the few WNBA players who decided to speak about the controversial debate on transgender people participating in women’s sports.
During an interview with The Athletic, Cunningham said it’s common sense that transgender people should not be playing in women’s sports and added that she would always believe that.
Cunningham shared that she believes it’s important to protect children and little girls, who are also involved in that category.
Doubling down on her viral remarks, Cunningham took to Instagram on Thursday and shared a few snaps posing in her pregame outfit, with “I said what I said” as the post’s caption.
In her interview in The Athletic, Cunningham also said:
“But I’m also there to love biological women, and I think that there are rights that need to be protected,” Cunningham continued. “And, as I said, I’m gonna stand true to that. I’ll never falter in my beliefs in that. But I have never once stated that I hated the trans community.”
“Everyone always comes at it as a negative. Well, me coming out with that, so many people are coming out with the positive, saying, ‘You know what? Finally, someone has said something.’ And I don’t really look at either side of those because I know whatever I say, I’m going to get hate and I’m going to get love, and if I’m going to live by the love, I’m gonna die by the hate, and that’s just not who I am. I beat to my own drum.”
Columnist Praises Sophie Cunningham’s Take On Trans Players in WNBA
Columnist Emily Jashinsky appeared on “The Megyn Kelly Show”, a conservative-leaning talk show, on Thursday and praised how Sophie Cunningham had a strong stance in the situation despite being a high-profile player.
Jashinsky pointed out that Cunningham said she is not political and that she just believes this.
Jashinsky also added that players coming out to talk about this situation without any political agenda and say that they are just standing up for human and civil rights makes a difference.
“Not one major current female athlete playing right now had done what Sophie Cunningham just did in the last couple of days. I did not realize that,” Jashinsky said.
The columnist also highlighted how Cunningham is referred to as “MAGA Barbie” by many viewers.
