With her exemplary play on the court, Sonia Citron has been making her loved ones extremely proud. But the Washington Mystics guard may have outdone herself on Sunday, when she led her team to a thrilling quadruple-overtime victory over the Portland Fire.
After Citron finished with 32 points on 45.0% shooting from the field, she ran over to her boyfriend Marist Liufau, who was sitting courtside. Liufau, a Dallas Cowboys linebacker, later shared a photo of their embrace with a sweet, two-word caption for his significant other.
“The greatest.”

No one could argue with Liufau’s superlatives on this night, as Citron scored two incredibly clutch layups in the final minute of the game to seal the deal for Washington.
Though the one-time All-Star struggled to shoot from beyond the arc, going just 1-for-7 on her three-point attempts, Citron made a living on the charity stripe. She made all but one of her 14 free throws in this home game.
The fans at D.C.’s CareFirst Arena were treated to a slugfest that saw a total of 12 lead changes and 21 deadlocks. Aside from Citron, Michaela Onyenwere also poured in the buckets for Washington, putting up 30 points along with five rebounds and five assists.
Kiki Iriafen added 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Mystics, who narrowly won the rebounding battle against the Fire. On the Portland side, Carla Leite had a dominant showing with 32 points, six rebounds, and nine dimes.
“Thank Goodness”: Sonia Citron Gets Candid on Conclusion to 4OT Game Against Fire
Human as she is, Sonia Citron admitted that the exhaustion got to her after the long Sunday night battle against the Fire.
“Thank goodness, sure. It’s like, I think we just in like a group hug. I don’t think we even had energy to celebrate. It was just like it’s finally over.”
Fortunately for the Mystics, all the energy expended was worth it as they came away with the win in the first quadruple-overtime WNBA game since 2001.
