The Washington Mystics and the Portland Fire just produced a game for the history books. The Mystics won 124-123 vs the Fire in a game that took four overtimes to find a winner. Sonia Citron, Michaela Onyenwere and Kiki Iriafen of Washington and Carla Leite, Sarah Ashlee Barker and Megan Gustafson of Portland all put up spectacular performances.
The game broke multiple WNBA records as well.
- By the criteria of duration, this game tied for the longest WNBA game.
- It was also the 2nd highest WNBA scoring game, behind the Phoenix Mercury’s win over the Minnesota Lynx on July 24, 2010 (127-124).
- This was the first 4OT game in the WNBA since 2001 and only the second in WNBA history. On July 3, 2001, it was Washington itself that was involved in 4OT win vs the Seattle Storm (72-69)
Mystics’ Citron and Fire’s Leite both scored 32 points. Citron added six rebounds and four assists in 53 minutes. Meanwhile, Leite played for 48 minutes and had six rebounds and nine assists. It was Citron who eventually had the last laugh over Leite with her game-winning basket.
Michaela Onyenwere played 49 minutes scoring 30 points with five rebounds and five assists. Kiki Iriafen was another one who had one of the best games of her career. She had an impressive double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds. She also had six assists and two steals.
Fire’s Sarah Ashlee Barker and Megan Gustafson well and truly supported Leite. Barker ended up with 25 points, six rebounds and three assists. Gustafson scored 20 points with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Bridget Carleton also chipped in with 16 points, three rebounds and two assists.
