Sabrina Ionescu is facing massive scrutiny from fans amid her rough run in the 2026 WNBA season. Her woes continued as the New York Liberty lost 86-83 to the lowly Washington Mystics on Friday, in which the veteran star had nine points, three assists and four turnovers on 4 of 13 shots.
On the season, Ionescu is averaging 8.8 ppg, 3.5 apg and 2.5 tpg, while shooting 31.7% from the field and 29.4% from three-point range. The Liberty losing to a sub .500 team eight consecutive wins put more focus on Ionescu’s drastic dip in form this year. New York also fell to 2-2 with her in the lineup.
After Friday’s underwhelming game, fans didn’t spare Ionescu for not playing to her standards. Here are some of the reactions on X:
Sabrina Ionescu’s injury issues and inconsistent playing time have impacted her production
Sabrina Ionescu’s dip in form almost feels expected as the veteran guard hasn’t played much this season. Ionescu missed the first few weeks with an ankle injury. She debuted on May 24 in a 91-76 loss against the Dallas Wings, tallying 11 points, five rebounds and seven assists, but shot just 4-for-15.
Ionescu then missed time with a back injury and was sidelined until Sunday, when she returned and played 25 minutes off the bench against the Mystics in an 86-64 blowout win. Ionescu recorded five points, three rebounds and three assists but took just four shot attempts, making one.
She had one of her better games on Wednesday in the 96-95 win over the Chicago Sky, in which she scored 10 points on 4 of 9 shots in 28 minutes. Ionescu also hit the game-winning layup after New York nearly squandered a double-digit lead.
It seems she’s still trying to find her rhythm, so, naturally, she’s not playing her best. However, with more reps, a shooter and playmaker like her could rediscover her momentum again.
The Liberty play the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday, marking Ionescu’s fourth game in seven days. She could be due for a big night at the Crypto.com Arena amid this healthy stretch.
