On Monday, the Las Vegas Aces were at the mercy of the Dallas Wings as Paige Bueckers helped orchestrate a 96-66 rout of the defending WNBA champions. In this blowout affair, Bueckers had an all-around game with 10 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and zero turnovers.
Even before Bueckers stuffed the stat sheets that evening, Aces head coach Becky Hammon gave the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year her props during the pre-game media session.
“She’s a very hard player to defend. You bring a double team, she’s going to pass it. If you don’t, she might score over you. She’s just a stud. I’m a fan.”
Hammon also commended Bueckers for breaking down the game to a fundamental level with her on-court smarts and execution.
“She plays the game at what I would say is a simple level, but it’s not simple. It’s very strategic, what she’s doing and how she reads defenses.”
This is high praise coming from Hammon, a multi-titled WNBA head coach and a cerebral point guard during her playing days in the league. Like Hammon at her peak, Bueckers has learned how to dominate games by blending her sweet shooting with her proficiency in distributing the ball.
Thanks in part to Bueckers’ combo guard skills, the Wings have gotten off to a 9-5 start this year. With two more regular season wins, Dallas will overtake their win total from their dismal 2025 campaign.
“I See DT So Much in Her”: Veteran Guard Compares Paige Bueckers to 3x WNBA Champion
Six-year pro Sug Sutton has just arrived in Dallas as one of their newest signings, but already, she’s seeing shades of Diana Taurasi in her young teammate Paige Bueckers.
Ahead of the Wings-Aces game, Sutton compared the sophomore guard to Taurasi, her teammate in Phoenix from 2023 to 2024.
“I see DT so much in Paige…Her game, personality and how she carries herself on the floor.”
If there was any all-time great that Bueckers could look up to as a model, it’s Taurasi, who also had a storied career at UConn before taking the WNBA by storm.
