Curt Cignetti is one of the most revered coaches in college football. From starting as a graduate assistant in 1983 to leading the Indiana Hoosiers to a national title this year, Cignetti has taken some major strides along the journey.
He joined a struggling Indiana program in 2024. Before that, the team used to sit near the bottom of the table every season. Cignetti changed that in the first year he coached the Hoosiers.
In addition to the bad run, Indiana wasn’t known for its football program. Basketball was the dominant sport, and no one thought that they’d be title contenders in recent years, let alone become the champions.
Cignetti took the Hoosiers on an unbeaten run this year, and in the final game against the Miami Hurricanes, dreams became reality. If we look into his family history, we can understand where that determination and game IQ come from.
Who is Curt Cignetti’s Dad?
Curt Cignetti’s father is Frank Cignetti Sr., a name that carries serious weight in college football coaching circles, even if it never chased national headlines. Frank Cignetti Sr. was a legendary program builder, best known for his long and successful tenure at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
He turned the school into one of Division II football’s most consistent programs. His teams were defined by discipline, physicality, and preparation, traits that became hallmarks of the Cignetti coaching identity.
Frank Cignetti Sr.’s influence on Curt’s career goes far beyond genetics or opportunity. Growing up around his father’s program, Curt was immersed in the day-to-day realities of coaching from an early age.
“My dad was a great role model growing up. I was the oldest of four, and he led by example. He had a presence about him, and he had great work ethic, disciplined commitment,” the Hoosiers head coach said during CFP media day.
“Back then…grew up western PA, everybody worked in the mill or the mines, and he went to college and became an assistant at Pitt, Princeton, West Virginia for Bobby Bowden, became the head coach (at West Virginia), and then came down with cancer my senior year of high school and was given his last rites twice.”
Even though his father couldn’t finish what he had started, his journey became the blueprint and inspiration for Curt as he became a football coach. That foundation is evident in how Curt Cignetti operates today. From rebuilding programs to shaping up talent, his father’s football coaching philosophy can be seen in every move Curt makes.
