Sherrone Moore Update: Court Delays Probable Cause Hearing to Collect More Evidence

Sherrone Moore was back in court on Thursday, January 22, six weeks after his initial arrest on charges of third-degree home invasion, a felony, and misdemeanor, the same day he was dismissed from the University of Michigan for having an improper relationship with a staffer.

He was back in court for the first time since his arraignment. Since his arrest in December, he has been out on $25 thousand bail. He does have very stringent liberty conditions, including wearing a GPS monitor, not traveling outside the state of Michigan, and not approaching Paige Shiver, the staffer with whom he had an improper relationship and whose house he entered.

During his arraignment, Sherrone Moore pleaded not guilty. Moore’s legal team is seeking to have the home invasion and other charges against him dismissed. He was in court on Thursday for a probable-cause conference, which is usually an informal meeting between the defense, the judge, and prosecutors to discuss plea bargains, evidence, bail, and case procedures before a preliminary examination.

The probable-cause conference has been adjourned until March 19, as the defense continues to gather evidence.

Moore’s attorney, Ellen Michaels, told the press that she’s looking to have the arrest report tossed out in a different hearing at Washtenaw County 14A-1 District Court Judge J. Cedric Simpson, which is scheduled for February 17.

Sherrone Moore’s Attorney’s Message to the Press Following Thursday’s Court Appearance

Shortly after finishing their meeting at court on Thursday, Sherrone Moore and his attorney, Ellen Michaels, spoke with the press outside the courthouse. Here’s what Michaels told the reporters:

“Mr. Moore is innocent of these charges. … we filed a motion to quash the arrest warrant and dismiss the complaint. This warrant was issued based on false and misleading statements presented as fact. We’re confident the truth will come out in court.”

It seems like Moore’s attorney’s main argument is that the arrest was unlawful, and on that basis, any evidence the police collected during it is not admissible in court.
