When Will Sam Leavitt Return? LSU QB Injury Update Explained

After two splendid seasons with Arizona State, where quarterback Sam Leavitt completed 61.3% of his passes for 4,513 yards with 34 touchdowns and nine interceptions, along with 749 rushing yards and 10 scores, LSU came calling.

The redshirt junior was the top player in the transfer portal, and head coach Lane Kiffin got him by his side. However, before he transferred to LSU, he underwent surgery for a Lisfranc foot injury in October. This raises a question about when Leavitt would be able to return after limited participation in spring practice for LSU, where he reportedly re-injured his foot.

When Will Sam Leavitt Return? Lane Kiffin Shares Status on QB

Sam Leavitt is on track to participate in fall camp without restrictions, per the latest update from Lane Kiffin.

“He’s gonna be able to do full summer stuff,” Kiffin said Thursday. “
I don’t know what the exact date is, but yes, he’s going to be able to do full stuff in the summer.”

Earlier this April, Leavitt had pins removed from his legs and has started running again. As a result, when the fall camp comes around, he’ll be able to practice full-tilt.

Leavitt’s transfer portal entry made quite a buzz. Several teams, including Miami, Tennessee and Kentucky, visited him along with the Tigers. LSU was almost a lock until Leavitt heard they were also chasing Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr., prompting visits to Tennessee and Miami. But with Williams’ decision to stay back, Leavitt decided to commit to LSU.

At Arizona State, the quarterback led the Sun Devils to a Big 12 title and College Football Playoff appearance in 2024. After missing a good part of the season due to a Lisfranc foot injury in 2025, he entered the transfer portal.

Leavitt will be joined by other key marquee transfer signees by Kiffin, including Ole Miss edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen and Colorado offensive tackle Jordan Seaton.

The LSU is hoping for nothing short of a deep run to the College Football Playoff. They have completely changed the outlook of the program by first hiring Lane Kiffin out of Oxford and then signing a fifth-ranked transfer portal class.
