Paul Finebaum didn’t hold back as he spoke about Bill Belichick’s introduction to college football, which doesn’t seem to have gone to plan. Over a year in, calls for Belichick to consider retirement are getting louder, and Paul Finebaum seems to be making no bones about the fact that the North Carolina head coach’s time may have come.
Finebaum spoke on Get Up ESPN about Belichick’s time at UNC, and didn’t hold back, referring to his time as “pathetic” and asking the legendary coach to seriously consider retirement.
When asked what was at stake for Belichick, Finebaum said:
“I think his college future. No one’s taking away his six Super Bowls, but ending like he is going to end is really embarrassing and sad and in many ways pathetic, because this didn’t have to happen. He only took this job because he was bitter that he couldn’t get an NFL job. He chose the wrong place … he should seriously consider retirement.”
ACC Network Analyst Adds To Bill Belichick’s Woes
It isn’t just Paul Finebaum who’s unsure of UNC’s chances of success in the coming season. ACC Network analyst Eric Mac Lain said something similar about the UNC squad.
“I don’t think I’m confident in that roster,” Mac Lain said, per Inside Carolina. “I don’t know if I’m confident with that they have retooled and rebuilt. I think they’re still yearning for that… I think that roster is still a ways away.”
Bill Belichick still has the opportunity to prove the critics wrong and go on a winning run, but he’ll need a strong start to the campaign to silence his critics once and for all. UNC’s season opener against TCU would be a great place to begin that run with all eyes on the former NFL coach.
