President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order in favor of the Army-Navy game, which has been a long-standing college football tradition. Here’s everything you need to know about the order.
The Army-Navy Game has been played in the week between the end of conference championship weekend and the start of the College Football Playoff. President Trump wants an exclusive national broadcast window for the game.
Over the last few years, we have witnessed several key changes in the college football postseason format. What once used to be the College Football Playoff with four teams has been expanded to a 12-team format since 2024.
But that’s not going to be the last change in the format. There are talks of an expansion to potentially make it a 16-team format. While that will help bring more programs under the spotlight, there is a major issue with that format.
In order to accommodate the new teams, the games will have to be moved up on the calendar, and that will come in the way of the Army-Navy game. Before the discussions could reach a conclusion, President Trump came to the rescue of the historic rivalry game.
“For over a century, the Army-Navy Game, known as ‘America’s Game,’ has stood as a symbol of excellence and the American spirit. Now, the recent and potentially ongoing expansion of the College Football Playoffs (CFP) and other postseason college football games threatens to encroach upon the second Saturday in December — a date traditionally reserved exclusively for ‘America’s Game.’ Such scheduling conflicts weaken the national focus on our Military Service Academies and detract from a morale-building event of vital interest to the Department of War,” the order read.
In “Section 1. Purpose” of the order, President Trump stated that “no college football game, specifically college football’s CFP or other postseason games,” will be broadcast at the same time, avoiding all possible conflicts.
President Donald Trump Explained the Meaning Behind the Rivalry Game
Before signing the executive order, Trump took to his Truth Social account and detailed why the historic rivalry game should be protected.
“The Army-Navy Game is one of our Greatest American Traditions — Unmatched Patriotism, Courage, and Honor! This incredible Tradition is now at risk of being pushed aside by more College Playoff Games, and Big TV Money,” he wrote.
Trump assured that under his administration, the Army-Navy game will not face any threat, and the second Saturday in December will belong to Army-Navy.
