“We Deserve to Collect”: Ole Miss AD Breaks Silence on Potential $1,000,000 Lawsuit Against Former LSU Transfers

Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter is reportedly considering filing a lawsuit against two former Rebels players. Princewill Umanmielen and Devin Harper, who were with Ole Miss, transferred to LSU in January.

During a conversation with the (Jackson, Mississippi) Clarion-Ledger, Carter said that taking the players to court is one of the possible ways to recoup buyout payments. In his opinion, based on the contract, Ole Miss deserves the money.

“Those two, we’re going to continue to figure out how to collect. We feel like, based on the contract, we deserve to collect,” he said.

The legal route isn’t confirmed, but Carter noted that it is an option that he has on the table. It is common for schools to cover the buyout fee, and Ole Miss has paid buyout fees on behalf of incoming players, but it’s still waiting for the money that Umanmielen and Harper he believes they still owe Ole Miss.

On3‘s Ben Garrett reported that the approximate figure that’s owed to Ole Miss is $407,000 for Harper and $590,000 for Umanmielen, bringing the total to nearly a million dollars.

When Carter was asked about the specific amount, he declined to give a proper breakdown, but he made it clear that the amount is significant, which is one of the reasons why they’re considering taking the matter to court.

“Those are the kind that, having signed a brand-new rev share contract basically a week or two before wanting to leave, those are the kind that put you in a bind, especially there in the portal cycle,” he told the Clarion-Ledger.

Despite the circumstances, Carter said that Umanmielen and Harper were good players.

Ole Miss AD on Development Around Vaught-Hemingway Stadium

Ole Miss is working on a major project to transform the area north of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The project is said to be a mixed-use space that would create an entertainment district on 25 acres of land surrounding the stadium.

“That’s going to be a process that’s probably going to take several months to work through,” he told the Clarion-Ledger. “The most important thing is we get IHL (Institute of Higher Learning) approval and work through that with IHL staff and IHL board members and talk to them about why the project is important to our campus.”

The project is still in the early stages, but Carter is confident that over the next several months, it will start to take a proper shape and soon be available for use.
