LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin is working hard to flip No. 1 wide receiver recruit Easton Royal from the Texas Longhorns, to whom he committed months ago. The five-star prospect from New Orleans is the top receiver in the 2027 class.
Kiffin is making a push for Royal, a Louisiana native from Brother Martin High School in New Orleans. LSU has conducted multiple visits and is expected to position itself strongly in terms of NIL.
On Tuesday, On3’s Steve Wiltfong shared what Royal told him at the Under Armour All-America Bowl in late December about how he views Kiffin’s squad.
“I mean, he’s spending a lot of time around the program, has regular dialogue with Coach Kiffin, Coach McDonald, and this coaching staff, and he truly believes that LSU is going to be one of the most explosive offenses in the country,” Wiltfong said.
“Lane Kiffin at that time told him they’re going to light up the scoreboard. And the message has stayed consistent and the same. And on this visit, they pulled out stats with what he said was true information about their offense.”
Why Flipping Easton Royal Could Be Hard For Lane Kiffin’s LSU
In the same conversation, Steve Wiltfong added that it will be hard for Lane Kiffin to flip Easton Royal from Texas, given the number of elite wideouts that Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian has rolled out over the last decade or so.
“It is hard to flip an elite player from Texas, particularly a wide receiver, where Steve Sarkisian has coached some of college football’s best wideouts over the last decade or so,” Wiltfong said.
“The resources around Austin and that Texas football program are exciting, but LSU emphasizing how they’re able to support their in-state athletes at LSU, in addition to all the other things, keeps them prominently in the mix.”
That said, there are signs Texas still holds the advantage. On June 2, Royal reportedly canceled planned official visits to Ole Miss and Tennessee. Many believe this was because Royal is firm about his commitment to Texas.
